There was a state Senate bill SB7 that was passed in Texas on January 1, 2002. This was created in order for Texas residents who live in deregulated areas to have the opportunity to choose who their electric provider is. Before Deregulation in Texas, there was only one Utility company that managed the transmission and Distribution of electricity to your home and business. There was only one price for electricity as well considering it was all through one Utility company. There still is only one company that handles your local transmission and distribution of your electricity, but you have the power to choose which retail electric provider suits you the best and can save you the most money by charging you less for what you use.
All of these retail electric providers are governed by the Public Utility Commission of Texas and must act in according to state laws. The Public Utility Commission is responsible to assure the safety and the reliability of the delivery of electricity. It doesn’t matter which Electricity provider that you choose, because the electricity will all be distributed the same. What matters is if you are taking advantage of the low prices and savings or not.

How Easy Is It To Switch???
It is very SIMPLE and easy. Once you have chosen a new electric provider and they have accepted a contract then your new electric provider will contact ERCOT and your TDSP (Local Wires Company) to make the switch. You don’t even have to call your old provider. Your new electric provider will change the electric service on your next meter read. You will continue to have invoices mailed to you from your old provider until you are paid in full, so be aware of any outstanding balances with your old provider.
